Infantry Officer's sword, 1795 (c); blade is curved, fullered and spear pointed; knucklebow guard and stool are of one piece and a curled side bar joins the knucklebow to the stool; possibly an ebony grip with an engraved metal plate; leather scabbard with the retailer's name engraved on the mouthpiece, Goldneys, late Neild; the National Maritime attributed the ownership of this weapon to a Capt Robert Knox, however, as no Naval officer of the period had that name, it is likely to belong to a Thomas Knox, Grenadier Guards 1794-1796, this would also be consistent to the badge on the hilt. Skeleton of the horse Marengo; in a glass case; Marengo was an Arab horse with a light grey coat, standing just over fourteen hands high; he was purchased by Napoleon after the battle of Abourkir in 1799 and after the Emperor's defeat passed into the ownership of Lord Petre who then sold him to Lt Gen J J W Angerstein, Grenadier Guards; the horse died in 1831.
